If you’ve grown up in a Christian home, it is easy to know how to pray. Your parents likely taught you to say grace over dinner or to recite bedtime prayers. Yet for a new Christian, talking to God is a completely unfamiliar experience.
On a recent Share Life Today, John Sorensen, president of Evangelism Explosion, explained that Jesus gave the perfect model of prayer to share with someone who recently accepted Christ. He said,
One night, Jesus’ disciples heard Him praying, and when He was done, they asked Him how to pray! It wasn’t like they had never prayed before, but after hearing Jesus speaking to the Father, they knew they were missing something. This is when Jesus gave us a prayer pattern to follow. We all know this as the Lord’s Prayer. How can you make the Lord’s Prayer your own prayer? First, adore God – praise Him for who He is! Then, confess your sins to Him. Thank Him for all He has done and then ask Him help. Prayer isn’t easy, but nothing of value can be done without it, so learn to talk to the Father! When you do, others will notice and will want what you have – a close relationship with the Lord!
