One of my favorite sightseeing excursions over the years has been Alcatraz, the abandoned prison that sits on a small island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Between 1934 and 1963, the U.S. government sent the worst of the worst to this “inescapable” prison.
I remember walking through the empty cells and placing myself in solitary confinement, imagining what it would be like if it Alcatraz were still housing these hardened criminals. All I could think about was how hopeless it must have felt to have been confined there, while people nearby were enjoying one of the most vibrant cities in America.
But there’s an even more important situation to consider today: the thousands of prisoners incarcerated across America today who have never heard the gospel!

Does your church have a jail or prison ministry? In Hebrews chapter 13, we’re reminded to “Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them.” Just think what would happen if more people of faith got involved, not only with the prisoners, but with the families of prisoners — offering them the help and healing that comes through the saving power of Jesus Christ. Many of these inmates will return home. Imagine the difference it will make if they know Jesus!
