When I was around 10 years old, my parents took me to Fish Fest, a big Christian music festival.

In between performances, we roamed through a little marketplace area, and I remember seeing a pair of gold earrings for sale that I absolutely adored. So, later that day, my dad took me back to that booth and bought them for me.

When we got back to our seats, my mom was frustrated with my dad—and rightly so. The earrings were $28 and she was correct that we could have, in fact, gotten the same ones at Claire’s for $3.

But my 10-year-old heart was so happy because, while I didn’t care much about having nice earrings, I knew that, to my dad, I was worth it.

I think about that day every time I wear those gold earrings. They are my favorite pair.

And while I gladly inherited my mom’s giftedness at saving and stretching a dollar, I’m often challenged by the way that my dad so freely gives, out of love and mercy.

This Father’s Day, I look at this verse with such gratitude:

“Just as a father loves his children, so the Lord loves those who fear and worship Him.” (Psalm 103:13 AMP)

I’m thankful that the love and affection my earthly father has given me over the years has ultimately led me closer to my heavenly Father.

As Don Stephens says:

“Now you go, give honor to your heavenly Father’s heart of mercy as you help someone today.”
