In the last week, the coronavirus pandemic has seized the attention of the nation and the world. Yet even as our federal government introduced measures to contain the spread of the virus and calm economic unrest, Americans’ fears have morphed into their own sort of pandemic, with a rash of school closings, empty airplanes and long lines at grocery stores.
In times like these, Christians and non-Christians alike often turn to God and ask why He allows such things to happen.
On a recent Core Christianity, a listener asked Mike Horton why God uses suffering and trials to make us holy and more patient. Mike responded,
We can be confident that God has a purpose in everything because right when it seemed like there was no purpose, right when it seemed like Satan had won and God had lost, God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself with our savior hanging on the cross. He was punished in our place. He bore our grief. He bore the consequences of our guilt.
God’s promises today are as true as they ever were. As He reminded us in Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Ultimately, our hope is in the Lord. “For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.” Psalm 71:5.
