What does empowerment mean to you?
We hear from all forms of media what empowerment means in today’s society. As a student at a secular college, I’m surrounded by people with different views and worldly mindsets. In these classes, it can be challenging if you’re not strong in your faith. Professors aim to teach you an atheistic view or even worse that God is the reason the world is so messed up. I saw this in my Women Studies class and many others. If only someone was bold enough to share the truth. But with all the mistruth thrown around, it can be intimidating to share your faith confidently. However, Barry Meguiar shows us that we have been empowered through the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel!
God has entrusted us with the Gospel to share to the world. Barry says, “You have what the world is desperate for — and you keep THAT for yourself?” I’ve heard the metaphor if you had the cure for cancer wouldn’t you be eager to share that with the world? Isn’t that a convicting thought! The cure for cancer can cure your physical body, but we have the Cure for the soul.
We give a lot of excuses for not sharing the Gospel like “I’m too shy,” “I’m busy,” “they’re going to mock me,” and so on. It is our job to plant the seeds but God harvests them. God empowers us with the Holy Spirit, Who gives us the words and confidence to proclaim the gospel — that God sent His Son to die for sinners and rose from the grave three days later (a paraphrase of John 3:16).
In times that I feel inadequate or fearful to share, I think of the verse: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
Sharing the gospel is a command, not an option, which is why it is called the great commission. Yet God is so good and loving that he doesn’t leave us alone to spread His word, He gives us the Holy Spirit.
Barry shares a verse we can be confident in: “Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.’” Matthew 28:18-19 (NLT)
Listening to the “You Are Empowered” feature on Ignite from Revival Outside the Walls, helped me see that God empowers and commissions us to do His work. How cool is that? He calls us to be His ambassadors and that is what I’ll be carrying with me in all my classes.
