“Jesus. What comes to mind when you hear that name?”
Hearing this question recently caught me off-guard.
What do I think of when I hear that name?
The lyrics to a popular Christian song flood my mind. “Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness – My God, that is who you are.”
His majesty, divinity, authority … those are the attributes I find myself studying.
Yet in an upcoming UpWords series, Max Lucado challenges his listeners to not lose sight of Christ’s humanity as we often focus on his divinity.
We are reminded of the humanity and humility of Jesus in the gospel’s account of His birth. As Max says,
“Majesty, in the midst of the mundane. Holiness in the filth of sheep manure and sweat. Divinity entering the word on the floor of a stable, through the womb of a teenager, in the presence of a carpenter … God with us.”
Why would Jesus choose such humility?
What are the promises of the incarnation?
The answer – Jesus understands us. As Hebrews 4:15 says,
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
After listening to this message, I found a new sense of awe and security in the incarnation.
