I still remember the shock I felt as a high school student when I saw “it” on a fellow-student’s desk.
It was a Bible. In plain view for anyone to see.
My classmate at our public school quickly caught my questioning eye and said, “I’ve decided to start carrying my Bible to every class and not let any other book set on top of it.”
She didn’t give much further explanation, but I understood it – she wanted to make a statement. Immediately my teenage self started to think: I’m a Christian – should I do that too? Are we allowed to that? And, more importantly to me at the time, what would people say?
I knew there would be teachers and fellow students who would fall into three categories: supportive, indifferent, and opposed. It was that third grouping that was most concerning to me. As I recall this memory, I wonder what difference it would have made if I had known my rights as a student when it came to the Bible and speaking up for my faith. I imagine a movement, like Focus on the Family’s #BringYourBible to School Day, would have given me the confidence and connection with other like-minded high schoolers to embrace faith and freedom all-year-round. This friend sure made an impression on me, and I can only speculate as to what would have been the result of multiple Bibles on multiple desks.
Consider what may happen in your community when students, parents, and school workers are introduced to #BringYourBible to School Day on October 3—because of something they heard on your station!
Here’s how you can help get students involved:
- Talk about the website (bringyourbible.org) where students can sign up to participate and access free get-started resources. When they do, they can also enter for a chance to win a trip for four to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.!
- Download resources to share on your platforms (radio PSAs, web banners, flyers, and more).
- Share about the importance of the Bible and free speech. Check out the “Bible Challenge Quiz” and “Do You Know Your Rights Quiz” for fun facts to share!
Thank you for spreading the word about this great event!
