This Thursday, March 21st, is World Down Syndrome Day and Joni Eareckson Tada wants you to do something very fun and a little bit unusual in order to celebrate and support friends with Down syndrome.
Every March 21st people are encouraged to wear brightly colored, patterned and even mismatched socks to raise awareness about Down syndrome and Joni wants people everywhere to join in! The idea is that when asked about the unique socks, it’ll be an opportunity to start a conversation about the unique gifts God has given people with Down syndrome.
Shauna Amick, Director of Radio, shares with Joni in a “Joni and Friends” broadcast this week that by wearing the socks, she’s going to not only highlight the value and beauty of people with Down syndrome, she’ll also be showcasing one of her favorite Scriptures.
Romans 10 verses 13 to 15 reminds us that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him unless they believe in him, and how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him, and how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, How beautiful are the feet of the messengers who bring good news! When we’re wearing brightly colored socks, patterned socks, mismatched socks, extra long socks or maybe only one sock – we’re going to attract attention and get people talking. Talking about Down syndrome, for sure, but also talking about Jesus and how He sees people with Down syndrome! Our fun socks then open the door to share the Gospel. And in that way, to anyone who’s rockin’ their crazy socks on World Down Syndrome Day, I say “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
