“Howdy, good neighbor.” Those were the recurring words from Mr. Wilson, the character on Tim Allen’s 90’s sitcom, Home Improvement. Each episode, Tim would wander outside in the midst of some dilemma and he would ultimately receive some sage advice from his neighbor whose face the TV audience was never allowed to see.
The poet Robert Frost once wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.” But nowadays, it seems harder to have even casual conversations with your neighbors – not just because of the fences, but because many of us just don’t make an effort!
On a recent Share Life Today, I heard John Sorensen say that 11 percent of Americans, or roughly 36 million people, relocate each year. Those people often are completely new to the area and are looking for new friendships. What a great opportunity for witnessing! John said,
“We have a great opportunity to walk over with a plate of cookies or a pie and welcome the new neighbors to the neighborhood. While chatting, you could ask if they’re looking for a new church home and if so suggest yours. Tell them what you like about it. You can even offer to give them a ride. If they have children, make sure you know something about your church’s children’s and youth activities. Parents often choose a church with their children in mind.”
